Cher’s son in tattered clothes, disoriented, and swollen legs mere months after his mother demanded his sole conservatorship

Lawyers had hoped the Cher family was focusing on "rebuilding their bond."

Cher’s son, Elijah Blue Allman, was spotted outside Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont looking disheveled in torn clothes, swollen ankles, and sweating profusely.

This comes after a fraught battle with substance abuse, a divorce, and mental health issues. Cher has been trying to find ways to help her son, and she went the conservatorship route. Page Six reports that Elijah made $120,000 and also had a trust fund set up by Cher and his late father, but that Elijah spent all his money on drugs and “put his life at risk.” After a 9-month court battle, Cher finally gave up on trying to get her son into a conservatorship.

Despite Elijah’s then-wife Marieangela King reportedly being one of the major forces who tried to prevent Elijah from being put under conservatorship, she recently divorced him in April. Lawyers involved with the situation hoped that the end of the court battle would create room for Cher’s family to focus on “rebuilding their bond.” Unfortunately, Elijah does not seem okay at this moment.

Elijah once shared in an interview that he started to experiment with drugs at age 11. And if you’ve ever been around someone struggling with weaning off drugs, you’d understand how it’s never a linear path. There are steps forward, followed by going right back to square one. Couple that with the attention of your mother being one of the most accomplished entertainers of a generation.

Incidentally, Elijah is not the only person whose struggle with substance abuse almost resulted in a conservatorship. Wendy Williams also had the same suggestion placed on her. It’s sometimes difficult to separate the need for someone needing help with the drug intake and their ability to handle their personal affairs, such as their finances. There are really no easy answers, but as things stand it seems like there’s something inherently infantilizing about dealing with a conservatorship. So maybe the authorities need to revise how it works.

Someone like Britney Spears clearly had a tough time maintaining her mental stability. But as Ben Affleck recently shared, her problems likely were accentuated by how the paparazzi treated her more than by her being unable to access her finances. And there’s also the situation of the person the people are placed under — whether it’s family or not, there’s starting to emerge a pattern that’s showcasing that these people probably need more vetting.

We wish Elijah all the grace in his attempt to deal with his multiple issues. He’s dealing with a divorce after an 11-year marriage and in an interview with Entertainment Tonight he acknowledged just how dangerous his drug habit really is by sharing this scary statement: “I always kind of kept it a little bit safe but you never can do that, even though you think that in your mind, of course the wrong things can happen. The wrong combination of things can happen, and you can just slip into the abyss.”

Elijah is not the only person struggling with substance abuse and these thoughts are a byproduct of the despair one experiences when they try and fail over and over again to kick the habit. But the trick is always taking it one day at a time.
